RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT’2005

The Right to Information Act’2005 is coming in force on 12th October’2005. Accordingly Chittaranjan Locomotive Works is fully prepared with the information pertaining to its working and as required under the Act. In terms of the provisions of this Act following information are hereby furnished as obligatory under the extent Act.

CHITTARANJAN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS

Chittaranjan Locomotive Works is the first industrial gift to free India by the planners of this nation. It is the only major Electric Locomotive builder in the country. Chittaranjan Locomotive Works became the first production unit in the developing countries, second in Asia and fifth in the world to manufacture 3-phase state of the art GTO Thyristor controlled Electric Locomotive. Chittaranjan Locomotive Works is an ISO: 9001 unit.

Brief History:

Chittaranjan Locomotive Works is situated just at the border of West Bengal and Jharkhand. It is at about 32 Km from Asansol and 237 Km from Kolkata.  The locoworks was initially established for production of 120 average sized steam locomotives with the capacity to manufacture 50 spare boilers.  Production of Steel Loco commenced on 26th January’1950. The first president of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad dedicated the first steam locomotive to the nation on 1st November’ 1950 and on the same day the factory which was originally called Loco Building Factory was named after the great patriot, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das. The production of Diesel Hydraulic Locomotives was taken up during 1968. After manufacturing 2351 steam locomotives of 5 types and 842 Diesel Hydraulic Locomotives of 7 types, the production of steam and Diesel Hydraulic Locomotives were discontinued from 1973-74 and 1993-94 respectively.

The production of Electric Locomotives commenced in 1961. In the process fifteen versions of electric locomotives were produced by CLW and the latest in that series is the freight locomotive WAG-7, WAG-9 passenger locomotive WAP-4, WAP-5, WAP-7.  During the year 2007-2008, 176 Electric Locomotives have been manufactured by CLW upto 29 Feb. 2008.

3-Phase Traction Motors type 6FRA6068 for WAG-9 locomotives and 6FXA7059 for WAP-5 locomotives have been manufactured indigenously by CLW.  Hitachi Traction Motor type HS15250A is also manufactured by CLW. During the year 2007-2008, 1110  Traction Motors have been manufactured by CLW upto Feb.2008.

CLW has in house facilities for machining and assembly of wheel sets, fabrication and machining of bogies etc. the facilities include modern CNC machines, plasma-cutting machines, inert gas welding sets etc.

CLW is an ISO-9001 unit and has a well-established quality system. The locoworks of CLW obtained its ISO-9001 certification on 13.7.1996

Steel Foundry, a unit of CLW was setup in the year 1963 for production of steel casting for Steel Locomotives. Over the years the product mix at CLW has changed from Steel Locomotives to Diesel, Electric Locomotives and Traction Motors. Then Steel Foundry produced castings for Electric/Diesel locomotives. Presently, the product range of Steel Foundry includes Bogies for WAG-5, WAM-4, WDM-2 & WAP-4 locomotives, Bolsters, Casnub Bogies & its components for wagon, smaller castings. The foundry processes 8 different grade of steel for Electric Locomotives, casting for Traction Motors. Steel Foundry supplies Trimount Bogies, FC Bolster, FC Bogie, Narrow Gauge Wheels, Tower Wagon Wheels, Knuckle, Coupler body and Yokes to various Zonal Railways.  Steel Foundry has developed different casting for WAG-9 locomotives like Axle Box, Stator chamber for 3-phase locos, Centre Pivot for UIC Bogies, Buffer plungers. In 1996-97, Steel Foundry bagged the prestigious ISO-9002 certification for its activities. During September’2003, it was certified for ISO-9001-2000
